April 1, 2017

Dear Friendship Families,

March is over, but we have exciting news and happenings to report! We have started a partnership with New England Science and Sailing (NESS), which has already been in to visit a few classrooms this month. All classrooms will experience either “Ocean Animals Big and Small” (Pre-K) or “Water, Wind, Waves, and Weather” (Kindergarten) with Mr. Evan or Ms. Megan, alongside the regular classroom teacher. Mother Goose came to visit pre-k classes in March! She brought her pretend goose and some musical instruments to accompany her rhymes. We have also had many field trips to the Southeastern CT Children’s Museum, Stop & Shop (some classes saw a live lobster!), and the Mystic Aquarium, which is a tradition for all kindergarten classrooms each year. The FFO sponsored a dinner and magic show that was very well attended; everyone had a great time!

April is an exciting month at The Friendship School! We have additional visits from NESS, more field trips, spring break, a new parent workshop (please see details below), and Week of the Young Child. Week of the Young Child is April 24-28 this year and is an annual celebration organized by NAEYC to celebrate young children. We will have plans to do fun activities for the following days:

  • April 24: Music Monday – sing, dance, celebrate, and learn
  • April 25: Tasty Tuesday – healthy eating and fitness at home and school
  • April 26: Work Together Wednesday – work together, build together, learn together
  • April 27: Artsy Thursday – think, problem solve, create
  • April 28: Family Friday – sharing family stories

Please stay tuned for more information on our specific plans for Week of the Young Child at TFS!

Here are some updates and important reminders:

  • Our lottery is this month! If you applied for one of your children who is not a current student, be on the lookout in mid-April for news regarding whether your child was accepted or is on the waitlist.
  • We have sent a parent/caregiver survey home for you to reflect on your and your child’s experiences with our school. The survey results will help us make improvements to our program so that we are providing the best educational experience for your child. Please return in your child’s backpack or into the survey box in the foyer by April 7. We will follow up later this spring with an additional survey to ensure we have made necessary adjustments based on your feedback.
  • We have teacher professional development on Wednesday, April 19. There will be an early dismissal (12:30pm). Please make plans to meet your child at the bus stop early, or to pick your child up here at school at 12:30.
  • The annual Butterfly Release Event will be May 23! Fliers were sent home today. Please contact Mrs. Terracciano if you have any questions.
  • TFS will be hosting a parent workshop on Conscious Discipline, which is part of the socialemotional curriculum we use here at the school. It’s a great opportunity to connect the strategies we use at school for behavior management and positive reinforcement to the home environment! We are working to arrange childcare and dinner for these sessions. A flier will be sent home very soon!

Sincerely,
