Head Start is a national, comprehensive, child development program which was funded in 1965. Head Start’s goal is to increase school readiness of young children in low income families by providing a wide range of individual services. The Thames Valley Council for Community Action (TVCCA) administers the local Head Start program with federal grants awarded by the Department of Health and Human Services.
The TVCCA Head Start program has been involved in the planning and development of the Friendship School since its conception in the mid 1990’s. Head Start is an active member of the Friendship School collaboration, along with New London and Waterford Public Schools and LEARN.
Children and families enrolled in Head Start at the Friendship School have opportunities for the following services:
ϖ Free breakfast and lunch for children
ϖ Holiday food baskets and gift programs
ϖ Referrals to other TVCCA programs and services
ϖ Ongoing family support on-site from the Family Advocate
ϖ Individualized services, tailored to the family’s strengths, in these areas:
education and early childhood development
medical, dental, and mental health
nutrition
parent involvement
family services
