What kind of a school is this?
The Friendship School is a magnet school for three, four, and
five year-old children who reside in New London or Waterford.
The school will enroll approximately 500 preschool and kindergarten students
for the 2009 - 2010 academic year. To apply students must be
three or four years old by August 31, 2009. Kindergarten students
must be five years old by January 1, 2010. Before and after
school child care is available on a fee-for-service basis provided
by the Carelot
Clubhouse, a division of Carelot Children's
Center, Inc.
Who governs the school?
The governing committee consists of three members from each of
the New London and Waterford Boards of Education, The Superintendent
from each school, the Executive Director of LEARN and the Director
of The Friendship School. LEARN is the lead educational agency
as well as the fiscal agent.
How do I apply?
Contact the school by calling 860.447.4049 to schedule a guided tour. Applications for the 2010-2011 school year are distributed during the tours and will be accepted from December 1, 2009 through February 26, 2010. A lottery will be held in early March and parents will be notified by mail whether or not their child was chosen for the lottery. Half of the students enrolled will be from New London and half
will be from Waterford. For information

Does the school offer transportation?
All students are transported by their home districts. Bus stops
and regulations are established by the local districts. Parents
utilizing before and after school childcare programs must provide
their own transportation.
What is the curriculum?
The kindergarten curriculum is based on the Connecticut
State Standards and aligns with Waterford's curriculum. A copy
of this curriculum can be found at The Friendship School in the
Parent Resource Room. Preschool curriculum is based on State
Department of Education's Connecticut
Preschool Framework. Concepts include:
- Developing the ability to think, reason, question and remember
- Engaging in positive social interaction
- Using language to communicate, convey, and interpret meaning
- Establishing early literacy skills
Who are the staff members?
Director Kathy Suprin and Assistant Director Dawn Davis
lead the staff of highly-qualified early childhood teachers,
certified by the State of Connecticut. Additional staff include:

- speech and language pathologists
- social worker
- physical therapist
- occupational therapist
- school psychologist
- school nurses
